1948 Taylors Vintage Port 1948

"From the very good 1948 vintage, Tasted 21 times since 1958 when I noted it as fine, smooth. Fullest and darkest'. It has been invariably magnificent. Still fairly deep and intense; beautiful bouquet, lovely fruit, scented, citrus, vanilla; sweet, full-bodied, powerful yet perfect flavour and balance with glorious blackberry-like ripeness. The finest, loveliest of all the vintages at Taylor's Tercentenary tasting in 1991. More recently, fabulously fragrant; sweet, fine, spicy. Probably now the best-ever vintage of Taylor. One further comment: one of the finest ports ever.March 1998 ***** "M Broadbent

1955 Croft Vintage Port 1955

" A dozen notes. Slightly variable botlings. 'Copybook', archetypal, in the mid-1960s, fully mature by the mid' 1970's: firm yet fruity; fairly sweet, medium-weight, excellent flavour and balance. Dry, slightly spirity finish. Now fully
mature; sweet, spicy, fleshy and as perfect as it will ever get. **** " M Broadbent.

1955 Taylors Vintage Port 1955

" Despite well over two dozen notes, not a wine I have yet come to grips with. An opaque blockbuster when young,
astringent and unready up until the early 1980's. In the early 1990's still fairly deep-coloured; a vast, deep, high-toned, spicy nose; fairly sweet, full-bodied, packed with fruit, extract, tannin and acidity. Then. in April 1993, served at a state banquet at Buckingham Palace in honour of the President of Portugal (impressive: occasion and wine}. In 1994, continuing my name dropping, a powful spicy port' dining with the LloydWebbers in Eaton Square, followed by a full-of-bite bottle at a Christie's boardroom lunch. Most recently - yet again unsuitably served alongside ' Flavours of Chocolate, Hazelnut, Coffee and Pear, Essence of Cherries and Vanilla'. My misguided but generous host, a connoisseur in every other respect, should have known better. Naturally, I tasted the port before the dessert. It was beginning to lose its depth of colour and weight though retaining its backbone and a good classic bouquet and flavour. **** " M Broadbent
